The Labour Party is set to lay into the government's expansive reforms of the benefits system later today.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Liam Byrne will claim that taxpayers are on course to lose £1.4 billion by 2015 as a result of the changes.

In a speech today, Bryne will outline a number of Department of Work and Pensions schemes that Labour believes are out of control.

Universal Credit and the bedroom tax are expected to take a drumming from the MP.

Bryne will say: "Three years into this government, their promised welfare revolution has collapsed because of a failure in basic delivery."

Yesterday, 24dash revealed that the bedroom tax seemed to be linked to a dramatic rise in arrears in South Wales.

A spokesperson for pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith said: "This is a last-ditch attempt by Liam Byrne to keep his job in the shadow cabinet."

"His talk of wasted money is frankly laughable when you consider Labour have voted against £83bn worth of savings to the welfare budget.

"Labour is panicking. After a summer of discontent, here is yet another disastrous speech, void of any ideas. Same old Labour is in the wrong place on welfare."
